Sobrestany is a district belonging to the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà, province of Girona). It is made up of a small group of farmhouses in a single nucleus and some dispersed farmhouses, most notably the historic Torre Ferrana or Más Cremat. Sobrestany (Torroella de Montgrí, Girona) Entrance by road to the village.
The first references to the district date back to the 16th century, coinciding with the desiccation of the Bellcaire lake (or Estany de Bellcaire, in Catalan). In reality, the "sobrestany" etymology would indicate the place location: 'above the lagoon' (sobre: above; estany: lagoon). Surely, their population increased with the concessions that was granted to the University of Torroella, the civil government of the time, to cultivate and pasture the grass. Therefore, its origin and history has been associated with agricultural activities.
Also noteworthy is the historic construction of Torre Ferrana, a fortified farmhouse dating back to modern times (16th-17th century). Its fortification was due to pirate incursions at the Catalan costs and basically consists of a defensive tower adjacent to the farmhouse.
