Located in the old town of L'Escala, the original nucleus of the old fishermen, with narrow and irregular streets, traditional white houses and small squares. The Plaça de la Vila, the church of Sant Pere and the beach of the boats stand out.
L'Escala began to appear in written texts starting in the 16th century as a small fishing and cabotage port dependent on the neighboring town of Empúries. Its use as a port, however, is much more remote. Its name —from Latin, 'Scala'-, which was very common throughout the Mediterranean area, designates a port or pier, a common refuge for boats. The dependency of Empúries was invested during the 17th and 18th centuries for the benefit of L'Escala. In 1680, the residents of the “port of L'Escala in the town of Empúries” —who already formed a neighborhood of 80 inhabitants—managed to have their own church, and in 1766 L'Escala became a town and head of the municipality.
